The Challenge

A brewery in Central Europe required refurbishment of 27 beer storage tanks that were showing signs of internal lining failure and external corrosion. The tanks needed a hygienic, corrosion resistant internal coating suitable for direct contact with beverages, along with long term external protection against UV exposure and environmental wear. The client sought a cost effective, compliant solution to extend the life of the tanks without the disruption of full replacement.

The Application

Internal surfaces were first cleaned and mechanically abraded to remove damage and prepare the substrate. Two coats of 501 CRSG, a surface tolerant epoxy approved for use in the food and beverage sector, were applied at 300 microns per coat to rebuild and protect the tank lining.

External surfaces were abrasive blast cleaned to SA 2.5, achieving a sharp angular profile of 50–70 microns for strong adhesion. A two layer system was then applied, 506 Aluprime provided anti-corrosion protection at 200 microns per coat, followed by two coats of 508 UVPU, a polyurethane topcoat offering UV and environmental resistance, with a total dry film thickness of 100 microns. Depending on tank access, materials were applied using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.

The Solution

This coating system restored the full structural and hygienic performance of the tanks. 501 CRSG provided a food-safe lining that met hygiene regulations, while 508 UVPU offered long lasting resistance to external UV and weather exposure. The combination of internal and external protection significantly reduced the need for future maintenance and prolonged the service life of all 27 tanks.
