Desalination Pump Repair

21st January 2025

Severe chloride crevice corrosion compromised the performance and structural integrity of a desalination pump diffuser made from duplex stainless steel. The harsh operating conditions, including high chloride levels and fluctuating temperatures, accelerated the damage, necessitating desalination pump repair. A comprehensive solution was required to restore the unit’s functionality and ensure its long term durability in this highly corrosive environment.

Resimac’s Desalination Pump Repair Solution

  • Diffuser cleaned and abraded to remove contaminants and ensure proper adhesion of repair materials.
  • Damaged areas treated with 101 Metal Repair Paste.
  • Coated internally and externally with two layers of 203 Super Flow.

Application Details

The damaged diffuser underwent an extensive cleaning and surface preparation process to eliminate contaminants and ensure optimal adhesion of the repair materials. Abrasive blasting was used to remove corrosion deposits and expose clean metal, creating the ideal substrate for repair. Once prepared, 101 Metal Repair Paste was applied to restore the heavily pitted and corroded areas. This high strength material filled cavities and rebuilt structural integrity, leaving a smooth, uniform surface for subsequent coating application.

To further protect the diffuser from the harsh operating environment, the entire unit was coated with Resimac 203 Super Flow. The first coat, in grey, provided a durable and impermeable base layer designed to withstand abrasion and chemical attack. A second layer in blue added an additional level of corrosion protection, improving the system’s overall resilience. This dual layer coating approach ensured comprehensive coverage, safeguarding the diffuser from both internal and external threats.

Results and Benefits

The repair not only resolved the immediate structural damage caused by chloride crevice corrosion but also fortified the diffuser to better withstand its demanding operational environment. The dual-layer coating system created a protective barrier tailored to resist both chemical attack and physical wear, ensuring consistent performance over time. As a result, the diffuser’s operational lifespan was extended significantly, contributing to a more stable and efficient desalination process. By eliminating the risk of recurring issues, the repair provided the customer with peace of mind, allowing them to focus on broader operational goals without concerns over unexpected equipment failures. The customer expressed confidence in the solution’s long term benefits, recognising its positive impact on overall productivity and reliability.
