Seawater filter refurbishment

4th October 2024

Due to high concentrations of chlorides, steel seawater filters from a container vessel required seawater filter refurbishment with a durable, corrosion resistant coating. The filters needed a finish that could withstand both impact and abrasion. High humidity during application also demanded a moisture tolerant coating.

Resimac’s Seawater Filter Refurbishment Solution

  • Flush surfaces with fresh water to remove surface chlorides.
  • Abrade the substrate using a Bristle Blaster to remove loose corrosion and achieve an SA 2.5 surface cleanliness.
  • Apply two layers of 208 Ceramic UW for protection.

Application Details

The 208 Ceramic UW was applied by hand using stiff-bristled brushes and applicators. A nominal thickness of 800 microns was achieved in one or two coats depending on access. These filters, as well as others coated similarly, have remained operational for the past two years without any reported issues.

Results and Benefits

By using Resimac’s advanced coatings, these seawater filters have been fully protected from corrosion, impact, and erosion, even in harsh marine environments. The 208 Ceramic UW coating provides long term durability, ensuring the filters remain operational without costly maintenance. In addition, the coating’s flexibility reduces the risk of damage, making it the ideal choice for the marine industry.

For many years, coatings such as 202 Ceramic Repair Fluid and 203 Super Flow have been widely used for protecting seawater filters. They offer excellent corrosion resistance and abrasion protection. However, over the past three years, 208 Ceramic UW has become the preferred choice due to its superior erosion and corrosion protection. Its flexibility dramatically reduces the risk of impact damage, making it a robust solution for seawater filters.

This two component, solvent free system is Bureau Veritas approved and designed specifically for harsh marine environments. Capable of being applied and cured underwater, 208 Ceramic UW is now the go-to solution for customers seeking long term protection for their seawater filters.
