Seawater Pump Refurbishment: A Case Study
Discover More11th October 2024
A marine seawater pump refurbishment was required in Portugal due to significant internal abrasion and external corrosion. The customer needed a solution to restore both the internal and external surfaces, ensuring long term protection and avoiding the high cost of replacing the pump. The goal was to extend the operational life of the pump while minimising future maintenance expenses.
Resimac’s Marine Seawater Pump Refurbishment Solution
- Abrasive blasting of internal and external surfaces to ISO 8501/4 SA 2.5 (SSPC SP 10/NACE 2) standards to ensure an optimal surface profile.
- Rebuilding internal pitted sections with Resimac 201 Ceramic Repair Paste.
- Applying two coats of Resimac 202 Ceramic Repair Fluid to protect internal surfaces from future abrasion and erosion.
- Treating external surfaces with two coats of 501 CRSG to provide long lasting corrosion resistance.
Application Details
The internal and external surfaces of the marine seawater pump were abrasive blasted to achieve a 75-micron surface profile. Internal pitted sections of steel were rebuilt using Resimac 201 Ceramic Repair Paste, which was applied to fill and restore damaged areas. Following the repair, two coats of Resimac 202 Ceramic Repair Fluid were applied to the internal surfaces using a brush, each at a nominal thickness of 350 microns, providing robust abrasion resistance. To combat external corrosion, two coats of 501 CRSG were applied to the pump’s exterior, ensuring protection in harsh marine conditions.
