The Challenge

A metal chimney stack in Poland, essential for emissions management, required protection against accelerated corrosion due to ongoing exposure to sulphur dioxide (SO₂) gas at 110°C (230°F). This challenging environment necessitated a robust chimney stack protection solution to prevent further degradation and extend the structure’s lifespan. Resimac’s coating system was selected for its proven durability and ability to withstand high temperature, high corrosion conditions.

The Solution

The surface of the metal chimney stack was abrasive blasted to ISO 8501/4 SA2.5 (SSPC SP10/NACE 2) standards, achieving a 75-micron angular profile to remove corrosion and ensure optimal coating adhesion. All weld joints, which are particularly vulnerable to corrosion, were stripe coated with Resimac 206 Ceramic HTA Fluid to a thickness of 400 microns for enhanced protection.

While the stripe coat was still wet, the entire chimney surface was coated using brushes, rollers, and plastic applicators. This process built up the coating to a nominal dry film thickness of 1mm, creating a seamless, highly durable protective layer capable of resisting the aggressive effects of SO₂ gas and elevated temperatures.

Results & Benefits

  • Provide a robust protection against corrosion and SO₂ gas at elevated temperatures
  • Improve the structural integrity of the metal chimney by reinforcing areas most susceptible to damage
  • Reduce the accumulation of contaminants, making future inspections and cleaning easier and less costly
  • Enhance operational safety by mitigating the risk of structural failure caused by ongoing corrosion
  • Extend service life of the chimney reducing the need for unplanned maintenance
  • Ensure uninterrupted emissions management, critical to meeting environmental compliance standards
