The Challenge

In critical areas of a UK water treatment site, plant room floor protection was urgently required due to repeated exposure to high strength sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). The existing ceramic tiled surface, already coated several times previously, had begun to fail. Spills were leading to chemical attack, deterioration of grout lines, and progressive loss of surface integrity.

A long term solution was needed to protect the floors against further damage, one that could be applied without removing the existing tiles, would tolerate chemical exposure, and offer easy maintenance over time.

The Application

The tiled floors were mechanically abraded using a floor planer to remove failed coatings and roughen the surface. Damaged grout and missing tiles were repaired with 571 Concrete Repair LW to create a suitable base for the new coating system.

A primer coat of 503 SPEP was applied at 150–200 microns and allowed to cure overnight. Two coats of 507 DWPU were then applied in contrasting colours at 300–400 microns each, forming a seamless protective layer.

The Solution

The combination of 503 SPEP and 507 DWPU provided a highly durable, chemical resistant membrane capable of withstanding sodium hypochlorite exposure in operational areas. The flexible polyurethane system adhered well to the prepared tiled surface and accommodated any minor movement or thermal variation.

The two colour coating system also enabled easy identification of wear areas during inspections, supporting proactive maintenance planning. The solvent free formulation ensured safe application with minimal disruption to surrounding plant operations.

Results & Benefits

  • Protected floors against long term chemical damage
  • Prevented further degradation of tiled surfaces
  • Eliminated need for full floor replacement
  • Two colour system supports proactive maintenance
  • Low odour, solvent free system applied with minimal disruption
  • Reduced long term repair and safety risks
